GovHackSA 2012 – A community driven hackathon backed by government

Saturday saw the hosting of the first “Gov Hack SA” event at the Bandwidth Barn in Woodstock. The Western Cape Government was well represented as Johan, Luke and myself attended the event. I do feel that the attendance could have been better, but considering that this was the first Govhack event, I'm sure the organisers will take the learnings on board and we'll see greater attendance next time. The event highlighted the eagerness within the development community to develop e-Government services and at the same time the lack of data provided by government. In the Introductory session, I mentioned that the WCG was in the process of drawing up our draft “Open Data and API”

United Nations Open Data Workshop Cape Town

From October 10th - 12th, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) in cooperation with the Centre for Public Service Information (CPSI) of Ministry for Public Service and Administration of Republic of South Africa will be hosting a workshop titled: "Next Stage in Open Government Data: Using Data for Transparency, Accountability and Collaboration". I will be attending the three day workshop with a view to connect with experts in this area and learn from other government bodies that have good Open Data maturity levels. Western Cape Government Mobile Website Traffic Growth Trajectory

Last week the team at e-Government for citizens held a meeting looking into the viablity of a smartphone/tablet application. For that meeting I plotted a quick chart showing the trajectory of mobile traffic to the Western cape Government website, if the growth rate remains the same. I used existing data from our Google Analytics and added the projection through to 2014. The value used was the number of Mobile and non-mobile traffic in the last week of july. There are a number of things that we could see play out over the next two years that might slow the growth: - Smartphone/internet capable device saturation (unlikely) - Economic recession leading to depression (More likely) - Increase

Western Cape Gov Website – Our 2011 achievements

I started working at the Western Cape Government in February of 2011, which was great because it allowed me a breather before the financial started in earnest from the 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012. With it being May, we are now well into the current financial year, allowing me to look back on the year past. As I’ve mentioned before there is a misconception that government workers don’t do much and with this post I’m hoping to highlight how much our team has done with so little.
