Western Cape Gov Website – Our 2011 achievements

I started working at the Western Cape Government in February of 2011, which was great because it allowed me a breather before the financial started in earnest from the 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012. With it being May, we are now well into the current financial year, allowing me to look back on the year past. As I’ve mentioned before there is a misconception that government workers don’t do much and with this post I’m hoping to highlight how much our team has done with so little. Planning the Western Cape Government mobile website

Just over a year ago I began my tenure at the Western Cape Government, joining Thomas Bevan, Marco Pretorius and Luke van Blerk on the provincial website programme. As the programme manager, my primary vision for the website was simple. It needed to have great usability on any device, publish great content and allow for easy social media sharing. But there was, and still is a hurdle in our way. The original CMS that the website had been built on is still being used after almost ten years is dying slowly, and we lack developer capacity to move to our new CMS standard, Drupal. Why SA Gov websites fail and why the Western Cape Government will shine.

The title of this post is a definite generalisation and obvious assumption. But, how have I arrived at this point of view? Yesterday (25th February 2012), saw the first GCIS Website Content Managers Workshop for 2012 hosted in Pretoria. For the “un-Governmentalised”, GCIS is an acronym for Government Communications and Information Systems, the national body mandated to provide clear website guidelines for all national government departments and provinces. As part of the contingency sent to this workshop, it gave us a good chance to speak to other government website managers.
