I am proudly South African, but I am equally happy to stand as a proud African. For many years Africa was labelled the “Dark continent” or “The hopeless continent”, and while there was merit in this title, Africa now is on the cusp of realising a true African renaissance. How it will unfold, we are are unsure about, but the series on my website will follow the events as we watch the African continent blossom.
I have a strong belief in the opportunities that exist and the potential of the African continent. A continent with vast amount of natural resource, ranging from oil to gold and metals, but sadly still wallowing in the category of “developing” or “emerging”.
Over the past decade six of the world’s ten fastest-growing countries were African. In eight of the past ten years, Africa has grown faster than East Asia, including Japan. Even allowing for the knock-on effect of the northern hemisphere’s slowdown, the IMF expects Africa to grow by 6% this year and nearly 6% in 2012, about the same as Asia.
