The Internet Vs Electricity in South Africa in 1900

12 October 1881 six “brush” arc lamps were strung up to the dome of the Cape Town Railway Station.
This was the first time the public could view electrified light in South Africa.
When I read about the plans by government to roll out Broadband internet infrastructure across our country, I feel that there are parallels to electricity about 100 years go. Electricity in it’s infancy was primary used for illumination, in the same way the current internet is mostly used for communication.

Very soon we will have “the internet of things” and the internet will enable all our household devices in the same way electricity currently does.
I’m almost excited for the world Aliya Levy will experience.
